Alternative Paths to Pastoral Transition: A Comparative Case Study by Bill McKinney

In the past several years increasing numbers of churches have been asking whether the interim ministry model is appropriate in all cases of pastoral transition. Might there be other ways to call new pastoral leadership? Has anyone taken a careful look at congregations that have use different pastoral transition models?

Last year I was asked by the Pension Boards – UCC to look at two large-membership United Church of Christ churches who faced the retirement of long-term senior pastors without relying on interim pastoral leadership: First-Plymouth UCC in Lincoln, Nebraska and Plymouth UCC in Des Moines, Iowa.
